ONCE AGAIN- Class #1 7pm at 11 Grove TONIGHT! Class #1 Tangogypsies Fundamentals group classes and practice! Come begin (or continue) your journey learning the language of Argentine tango social dancing. **Personal note from Karen** Today I wonder, how many times have I announced the beginning of the cycle? Honestly, I do not know. Since I made the commitment to teach the Tuesday weekly classes and host a social dance, some time around 2006, I have seen hundreds of new faces come into my class for their first lesson. Many stay and return occasionally and attend my next step workshops or special events I host. Several have gone on to become quite the tango enthusiasts! A small handful have become teachers themselves...... Most importantly, for me, is witnessing that first exposure, that first “tango moment”, the innocence of making a connection with the music, or inside the body, or simply connecting with another person. I love to see these simple moments of joy expressed in people! Though the process of learning this dance can be challenging for most people, those moments of joy make it worth the effort. For me, as a teacher, I continue to love sharing this beautiful dance, as a social platform, as an art, as a deep study in technique, as a philosophy and way of life! I receive so much from the process myself. Both as a teacher, and as a student, I continue my own journey of learning! For this I am so grateful. Thank you to every single person who took their first steps in Tango, through the door and into my class- thank you for sharing your energy and for your support and interest in the dance -and for trusting me to guide you. So, now I invite YOU to come join us. Always- WELCOME NEWCOMERS and returning students! Tuesday classes are always DROP IN friendly (no need to attend every week) NO partner needed! The relaxed atmosphere of the practilonga combines the relaxed etiquette of a practica with many of the same elements you will find at a more formal milonga and allows for sharing of information and ideas, practice of new movements, or just further work on refining all important technique and connection!! Practice is an essential part of the process to become a better dancer! Dialog with your partner, ask questions, work on movements, or just practice dancing in line of dance.... however you choose, but just do it- practice! FOR ALL LEVEL DANCERS Typically, with a “practilonga”,there is addition of more light in the space and a designated area for people who want to stop to work on a movement or have a dialog where they would normally impede the line of dance at a milonga. How does it work? The music- mostly traditional, with a few nuevo/alternative is played in “tandas”, as is found at most formal milongas. Dancers may chose to practice social dancing, moving counter clockwise around the floor, while working on refining our navigation skills or elements of the dance. The rules of etiquette are more relaxed, making it ok to dialog with your partner while dancing. If it becomes necessary to stop to dialog, or work on something, the respectful etiquette is for that couple to move into the center of the line of dance, (which should be left open), or move to the designated practice area outside the line of dance. Line of dance will be expected to continue moving. Suggestions for a productive practice 1. Find an element, concept or movement; something specific to focus working on. 2. Ask a partner if they would like to work on that specific topic with you. 3. Establish a practice period, where each dancer is making “mental notes”, but otherwise remaining silent. Perhaps 5 minutes or 2 songs 4. After the practice period , have a dialog time, where each dancer has a chance to say something. Choose something that felt “good,” or “right” about the topic, and then something that “could be improved”. Focus on one point at a time. 5. Repeat the practice, working to incorporate the new information 6. Dialog and practice until you feel it is time to choose a new focus element, or change partners 7. REMEMBER to use “I” statements; I feel, I need, I would like, I think, etc.... Generally these are received better and take away the feeling of blame. Avoid the use of negative words........if possible. Its always nice to thank your partner Please feel free to direct your questions to Tangogypsies host +/or assistants. 11 Grove St, Asheville, 28801 for more info- Karen Jaffe kjsummit@hotmail tangogypsies
