ADVICE FOR OTHER INDIE AUTHORS WHO WANT TO GET THEIR BOOKS INTO RETAIL STORES: I have just parted company with the distribution company who were getting my novels into NZ books stores/libraries after nine months of e-mails, their presentations to the book stores, their reps selling rounds, and waiting, waiting, waiting for orders. The $$$ break-down is this: for a $20 RRP book I get $6, they get $6, book store gets $8. The cheapest I can get offset books printed for is $1.94 per copy ... but ... I have to order 4000 copies to get that price. Add shipping from Taiwan = $8300. Author pays that upfront; distribution company pays you 60 days after arrival from printer. Total sales in New Zealand are unlikely to exceed 500 copies, and books are sale or return, so after 12 months I would likely have to buy back 3500 books for $21,000, and generally books that have been on shelf display are not in a condition to be resold. Only other option is POD books but a) most book stores wont touch books that look POD, and b) they cost me (including shipping) $6.50 per book. So, it would cost me 50c per book to have them go into the book stores and libraries through a distribution company; in NZ all libraries and most books stores will ONLY buy through distiribution companies. This is why I have finally joined the e-book revolution. Anyone else have into the book stores stories theyd like to share?
