AGCATAN 2014 - 1ST AC DOWNTOWN STREET KIDS REVOLUTION - 30DAYS / 30KIDS+ PROJECT I. RATIONALE: Many of us have had uncomfortable encounters while walking along the streets or sitting in a restaurant, when we are approached by snot-nosed, barefoot, half-naked street children asking for food. Others can be seen tapping on tinted car windows, asking for money. We see mothers holding out undernourished babies outside the nearby 7/11, Jenra and Nepo Malls. At night, they sleep wherever their tired feet end their walk for the day. Often this is in front of a closed establishment down town. We cannot deny the fact they’re also part of our community. If we see ourselves more fortunate or more advantageous compare to them then they might be the less fortunate or the disadvantage sector of our community. This November 2014, in celebration of the 151st birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio, the father of revolution, “liberating the country through social actions’’ we envision of giving THIRTY (30) STREET KIDS or more with a THIRTY (30) DAYS FULL OF ARTS, FUN, FOODS, DISCOVERIES AND LOVE on November 20 to December 20, 2014, with a three (3) day culminating event/ output Presentation / Christmas party on December 21, 22 and 23, 2014. This is a POTENTIAL project to gather volunteers, resources and create bigger impact in the lives of this community- an OPPORTUNITY to serve and be Christ-like or a channel of blessing to our brothers and sister; a month of POSSIBILITIES for them to create, to dream big and discover avenues to rise above their situation. A year-ender for all of us full of HOPE and spirit of community dubbed as the 1ST STREET KIDS REVOLUTION - 30DAYS / 30KIDS+ PROJECT. II. BACKGROUND: Social awareness is at the top of our priority; thus, we created the Bale Anghel (House of Angels), a shelter for children which caters to the needs of street children in the heart of the city. Bale Anghel is a safe haven for street children. In this place, they become children as they are supposed to; they have a chance to play and learn, to eat and sleep, to escape from the harsh realities of their lives even for just a little while. They stay and play at Bale Anghel for a few hours then go back out in the streets, because they say they need to beg. If they do not bring home some money to their parents they are bound to get hurt. We can stop the cycle, we can have good children even with delinquent parents. KFI has seen their transformation. When we started, some children were vulgar and unruly but now they are respectful and obedient without losing their childlike ways. For three years now, Bale Angel has been successful on its vision to provide children from the lowest economic class the same opportunity that every other child is given and answer their “right to education”. They are encouraged to attend public elementary or high school by providing for their needs in order to maintain their attendance in school. The goal is that each child will enrol, attend, and complete their grade levels with passing marks. As a reward, KFI’s Bale Anghel provides uniforms, school bags and school supplies yearly. Furthermore, monitoring their attendance as well as the compliance in their school work and progress is our staff duty. Today, our mandate to take care of the children is becoming more creative through the partnership of Teatro Angeleño a community theatre in the City with its food program campaign the End Child Hunger Philippines. We envision of a sustainable food program and levelling-up Bale Anghel Kids into a more dynamic Life Development Programs (weekend theater and arts workshops, recitals, leadership trainings, exposure trips, career guidance, mentoring and livelihood programs among others.) We believe that we can use art to effectively accomplish our mission of alleviating present condition of these children. A COMMUNITY IN A “WHOLISTIC” DEVELOPMENT. A HUNGER -FREE ANGELES CITY. III. OBJECTIVES: 30 days where children can be children, and receive their basic rights: GENERAL OBJECTIVES 1. Thirty (30) days of street kids off from the street life. 2. Thirty (30) street kids empowered, loved and inspired 3. Thirty (30) days of volunteerism and sprit of true community at Angeles City downtown SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES • To have a decent meal • To be able to take a bath and have clean clothes • To have access to medical assistance and first aid treatment • To learn basic reading and writing • To have basic counseling to emotional and psychological problems • To have someone to talk to who will understand and not judge • To play and be with other children • To sleep and rest • and most importantly, to learn about God and have a hope for the future IV. PARTICIPANTS: Street children can be classified into three (3) categories: 1. those who stay most of the time in streets and go home when they want 2. those who actually live on the streets with their families 3. those who have been abandoned They stay on the streets because: 1. poverty has forced them and/or their families to find ways to supplement their income 2. they have to keep themselves busy as they cannot afford to go to school 3. they want or need to escape family conflict 4. they run away from a physically abusive environment at home 5. they join fellow children for thrills Many of them have lived on the streets throughout their lives and have learned to survive there. Their sense of identity is connected to the streets - “they are free spirits”. Their outlook and way of life is totally different from what we know. Therefore, any solution to their problems must involve knowing them and letting them find their own solutions.
