AGENDA: New Zea Maori land What happens when race-based rule takes hold It was a bright cold day in July, the year 2033. Winstonia Smith pulled her coat tight to escape the vile wind snaking along Queen St. The tattooed face of the president stared down from a giant billboard wrapped around the Town Hall. “Maori sovereignty is good for everyone”, the caption beneath it read.......... Such could be the intro to an Orwellian look into the future of a race-based New Zealand after the democratic principle of equal rights based on citizenship was abandoned and the 50/50 treaty partnership myth was imposed on our political and commercial lives. The futuristic piece could continue by saying the “Maori sovereignty is good for everyone” signs everywhere were objects of derision furtively defaced, before asking the question, how could a nation that was humming with activity and brimming with wealth become sullen and desolate? Twenty years earlier, a constitutional battle was fought among the governing class of what was then informally called Aotearoa New Zealand to entrench the Treaty of Waitangi as supreme law.
