#AGRINNOVATION - #Malawis Legume Seeds Grain legumes are key to Malawi’s maize-based system as a cheap source of vegetable protein and vitamins but with major seed companies primarily focused on maize, a shortage of legume seeds occurred. The Research-Into-Use (RIU)-Malawi programme, funded by DFID, adopted an Innovation Platform (IP) approach which brought together legume seed stakeholders to identify bottlenecks and opportunities to increase seed availability. One key achievement is a policy by the government allowing farmers to participate in multiplication of legume breeder seed. Other benefits include the availability of increased quantities of breeders and foundation seed for farmers to produce certified seed. The increase in legume seed production also boosts soil fertility through nitrogen fixation.
