How many kids can say they were born in the front seat of a Lexus on the highway? Well now, for one baby girl the “Welcome to Delaware” sign has a whole new meaning. We got in the car and she said she felt the head coming,” said Kennedy Smith. 14-year-old Kennedy Smith had quite the weekend. Just hours after being nominated to the homecoming court at Appoquinimink High School Saturday night, she was helping deliver her baby niece. I just feel like I had to be the one to keep calm when everyone else is going crazy, said Kennedy. Her mother, Kellie, was behind the wheel of her Lexus speeding up I-95 from Middletown, Delaware. Her pregnant sister, Kelsea, was in the passenger seat they were just minutes away from Christiana hospital, but baby wasnt waiting. Karter Zoe Marcus came into the world 7:30 a.m. Sunday morning, going about 80 miles an hour I-95, somewhere near Newark, Delaware. Im proud of both my daughters. One delivered her own baby healthy, strong, and one helped with the delivery, so Im just proud of both of them,” said grandmother Kellie-Ann Smith. The family pulled into the Delaware House rest stop where they called 9-1-1. The calm and cool Kennedy was instructed to use her shoelaces to tie off the umbilical cord. She took her shoelaces off and basically she delivered the baby, said Kellie. Thats when New Castle paramedics arrived to help. She was was happy. She was just telling the child she loved her. She was very happy and scared, but I guess that would be normal, said New Castle Paramedic Travis Duffin. Mom and baby were taken to the hospital and all are doing fine. They even got a visit from the paramedics who will also have a story to tell. My understanding is that picture is going to be a part of her baby book ,so when shes old enough theyll be explaining the circumstances of her arrival, said New Castle Paramedics Chief Lawrence Tan. This may have been good practice for Kennedy. Go figure, shes already on her way to becoming a doctor. Im in a STEM program so Im training to be a physician. And I dont know this gives me more experience I guess so I think Id actually consider going into medical field and delivering babies, she said. Coincidentally, Kelsea was set to be induced on Sunday, but little Karter had other plans. See the live television coverage at myfoxphilly/story/26649053/baby.
