ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band — Take Me to the Land of Hell Chimera Music Exactly when did Yoko Ono’s banshee wail stop being an object of ridicule and hatred, and become an instrument of power and wonder? And how, in our celebrity-obsessed and still largely patriarchal world, did this woman manage successfully to establish herself in a role that these days is less “widow of Beatle” and more “godmother of the avant-garde”? Presumably, the answer to the second question is that she did it by ignoring everyone and ruthlessly pursuing her own vision (a brave strategy, even if you do have millions in the bank). So here she is, at 80, not trading on fame or sentimentality, but singing: “Don’t cut my hands — can’t strangle you/Don’t cut my legs — can’t walk out on you/Don’t cut my tongue — can’t spit on you/Don’t cut me off — I’ll kill you” — the stunning chorus of 7th Floor. The Plastic Ono band includes Wilco’s Nels Cline and her son Sean Ono Lennon, aided and abetted by a guest list featuring tUnE-yArDs, ?uestlove and Lenny Kravitz; but no one outshines Yoko, whether she’s snarling with rage or reminding us that she’s also a pretty balladeer on There’s No Goodbye Between Us. If only it were covered on The X Factor...
