ALERT: Weitz Equine has recently been made aware that there is growing evidence of a neurologic Equine Herpes Virus-1 outbreak in eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. There are 2 confirmed cases and up to 8 suspected in the area. All horses involved were either recently at a local barrel racing event or are housed with horses that traveled to these events. Word is being spread within the barrel community, and people are being advised NOT to go to barrel events for the next 3 - 4 weeks to prevent further spread while monitoring for new cases. It is still unclear which specific competitions or arenas have played a role in the outbreak. EHV-1 is a commonly encountered upper respiratory virus of horses, however; there is a strain of the virus that can cause severe and deadly neurological signs.
