ALL change, including eating better, exercising more, or getting - TopicsExpress

ALL change, including eating better, exercising more, or getting in better shape involves things like: * ambivalence, * contradictions, * complexity, and * competing life pressures, needs, and wants. (It also includes discomfort and, often, loss). Fitness, health, and nutrition coaches would do well to spend more time learning about this stuff. Because it IS our work to help clients identify and clarify their foundational motivations for thoughts, feelings, behaviors, & habits. And it IS our work to help them gain insight and understanding into their own diverse and complex identity, values, motivations, and life priorities. Yea, that sounds like a lot of psychology. And Im not a psychologist is what many coaches tell me. But you dont have to be a clinical psychologist. You just have to know enough to help people navigate these things with respect to eating better, exercising more or getting in shape. Because, if you dont, you wont be a personal trainer or nutritionist or health coach either. (At least, you wont be for very long). All those things - eating better, exercising more or getting in shape - require some form of change. And change often requires real, careful, patient, empathic coaching.
