ALMA, CHAPTER TWO. AMLICI. Marching to a melody that’s fresh, some have the knack Of holding up progression since they’re always looking back. It came to pass that in year Five of the Judges’ reign A demagogue stirred people up, and got them to complain That they no longer wanted judges ruling ev’rything – It was time to bring on back the glory of a king! Amlici was a rabble-rouser; priestcraft was his game. He thought he’d fool the people into giving him royal fame. He did not like the true church – thought them way too rich indeed. He promised that if he were king their coffers he would bleed. He convinced the simpletons and the dull backsliders That at his kingly court they would become wealthy insiders. The people voted, and their voices led to his defeat; They wanted nothing doing with this egotist and cheat. Had he been a patriot, Amlici would have bowed To the wishes of the boisterous, upright Nephite crowd. But instead he gathered those who thought that he was right And had himself declared a king, and armed them for a fight. They styled themselves as Amlicites, an army of deceit. The Nephites also armed themselves and marched with steady beat To the Hill Amnihu, where the battle did commence. Both sides suffered badly and the bloodshed was immense. But at last the Nephites did obtain the upper hand, Driving all the Amlicites right out of their own land. The Amlicites, now maddened with defeat and unbound rage Linked up with the Lamanites, their wicked war to wage, Spreading desolation through the land of Minon, where Men and women, and their children, they deigned not to spare. The army of the Nephites rushed to aid their neighbors quick And found the Lamanites upon the River Sidon thick. They fought upon the banks and soon the Nephites did prevail. Alma slew Amlici, and his army soon turned tail. The Amlicites and Lamanites to Hermounts were all fled; A land of carnivores that ate the living and the dead. The bones of that great army made a mound that lasted long – A monument reminding all that tyranny is wrong.
