ALONE BUT NOT LONELY "I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert. I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top." (Psalm 102: 6, 7) Jim is listless in his room upstairs. The hustle and bustle in the house downstairs is a sharp contrast to the lonely quietness here. Now lying in bed staring at the ceiling, now sitting on the bed-edge head in hands, Jim heaves a sigh every other minute. One more look at the magazine on his table where a group of young people sit around a youth leader and the tears begin to flow. “Why am I always left out?” Jim is alone, and lonely. Yes, great benefits can be yours from the quietness that derives from a planned loneliness. It’s a precious time to think, reflect upon your life generally, pray, set goals and renew your body through rest. Prolonged loneliness however is unhealthy for your spiritual and mental health. It is a child of youthful selfishness and the mother of injurious self-pity. Therefore you need to come out of it fast. How? Come out of your shell. Find people in need and help them. Share your Christian faith with others. Get involved with your church’s youth group. Give and it shall be given unto you. Challenge: Resolve to find joy in helping others. Prayer: Lord, heal my loneliness. Further reading: Genesis 40:1-14; Philippians 2:1-4 QUOTE: Come out of your shell.
