ALONE ON THE BEACH. Heres a short video, shot today, that takes you to an unusual place: an empty Florida beach. We are currently in the Florida Panhandle (Scenic Highway 30A along the Emerald Coast). This is certainly a beautiful area. We spend several months here every year. Normally, this time of year sees a lot of action on the beaches. Granted, spring break has passed, and the full tourist season has yet to fully engage. But on a typical late April day, there would be no shortage of activity on the beach. Today is different. Storms are passing through the area. Weve seen a fair amount of rainfall and strong winds that are blasting in from the Gulf of Mexico. As you can see in the video, few brave the beach. In fact, for a while I was the only person to be seen for miles. Its actually a fascinating experience to be standing alone on these beaches during this sort of storm. A salty mist fills the air (and quickly coats camera lenses and eyeglasses). Wind whips abrasive loose sand against exposed skin. Gulls and pelicans struggle against stiff headwinds. Theres beauty here, even on a day like today.
