ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter 321 Norristown Rd., Suite 260 Ambler, PA 19002 ALSphiladelphia.org SEVERAL days ago I was called out by Faye Heffner to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, and SURPRISE!, I’ve procrastinated and had to write a big check to the ALS Association. But that’s okay, because I write checks to them every year. My mother died 7 years ago from ALS. From the moment she was diagnosed, we knew there was no cure, and no hope of survival—ALS is always fatal. The ALS Association needs your contributions to find the cause and the cure so that in future this diagnosis won’t be an automatic death sentence. But there’s a more immediate part of their mission: services to patients and their families. They helped us find joy in living, despite limitations. They led us, and sometimes carried us, through the minefield of terminal illness, and they are, every one of them, angels on this earth. And so, I encourage all of you to support the work of the ALS Association, particularly the Greater Philadelphia Chapter, with a generous donation. Specifically, I’d like to challenge my mom’s sister, Millie Snader, who’s my go-to mom; my cousin Keli Witwer as a stand-in for her mom Bets, who is not just family but the dearest, dearest friend; and my cousin Michelle Knauer McMonagle and her husband Don, ’cause my mom loved them, she’s the only one of her sisters on social media, and he would look good wet.
