ALS Ice Bucket Challenge complete! a few thoughts to share... There has been tons of negative and positive info out there about this challenge the past few weeks. Articles on how it first developed from some random guys on a dare, questions about why would people pour water over their heads instead of just donating to whatever charity whenever they like, as well as major concerns about wasting water during the California drought. My take is simple: For whatever reason this challenge started, clearly it is working to raise awareness and funds for a horrible disease. ALS is a degenerative disease that inhibits the motor neurons of the brain and spinal cord. Over time, patients lose all motor (muscle) function, but remain totally mentally coherent. Please educate yourself about this disease! And then, ice shower or not- donate!! For those families who have loved and cared for someone through this disease- my heart is broken for you. Nobody can imagine the hell you and your loved one went through. So friends, please take the act of myself and my son dousing each other in ice water as a sign of love, respect, and reverence all of you who have been touched by ALS in some way.
