ALTOONA Prairie Meadows names 2 to board Two new members joined the board of directors at Prairie Meadows last month. The appointees are Mark Cooper, representing labor, and Karen Novak-Swalwell, representing Polk County. They replaced Dan Riley and Andrea McGuire, whose terms expired. Cooper is president of the South Central Iowa Federation of Labor. Novak-Swalwell is president of Francis and Associates executive search firm and hiring agency. Their terms will expire in November 2017. Prairie Meadows formed in 1989 as a nonprofit, with the goal of promoting economic development, jobs, agriculture and tourism in Iowa, officials said. It now includes a racetrack, casino, conference center, two restaurants and a 168-room hotel that opened in 2012. Since then the group has contributed more than $1.4 billion in taxes, grants and donations to operations in Iowa, according to the Prairie Meadows website.
