AN ACT OF BRIGANDAGE - We observed with total dismay the unfortunate situation that took place in Rivers State House of Assembly on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively and condemn such show of shame which is a national embarrassment and threat to our nascent democracy. It is unbecoming of Lawmakers to turn our hallow chambers to a ring where punches are exchange at will with impunity and total disrespect to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which guarantee freedom of expression and right to life. This show of shame began in the House of Representatives and it is spreading it tentacles to our State House of Assemblies and last week the same thing would have repeat itself at the floor of the Senate Chamber. This new development call for great concern and we question the credibility of people who are making laws for our country. If proactive steps is not taken to address this unfortunate and embarrassing situation in the country, it will put our hard earn democracy in jeopardy. In view of this, we want the National Assembly as a matter of priority to enact a law that: (1) Any lawmaker who throw punches at each other in the floor of the National Assembly, State House of Assembly and Local Government Legislative Assembly be dismiss for one full year; (2) His salary and all other entitlements withhold. This will serve as deterrent to others who are undergoing boxing training preparing for their own day. Democracy give room for divergent views and for it to thrive in Nigeria, we must learn to accommodate and tolerate the opinions others. Above all, we strongly appeal to our representatives and public officers at all level to put the nation above their individual or parochial interest. We need each other to forge ahead and wish peace to return to Rivers State. NS
