AN INTELLECT DOES NOT MAKE AN INTELLECTUAL What do you make of this claim by George Bernard Shaw: Only 2% of people think, another 2% think they think and the rest would rather die than thinking Sandile Memela holds An intellectual is a rare breed who, according to Americas leading female intellectual, Bell Hooks, lives and is committed to the life of the mind Their daily existence revolves around critical thinking. Unfortunately, the majority of human beings on earth don have the time or pleasure to do that. Memela goes on to say Academics may be familiar with the works of great intellectuals like Edward Said, Naom Chomsky or Cornell West but possessing that knowledge does not automatically turn them into intellectuals. There are many academics who will never be intellectuals. I agree with Sandile on the issue of being an academic does not make anyone an Intellectual I have come across many of those who have an alphabet behind their names and cannot raise a critical analysis, it makes you wonder how and why critical thought is not essential in the attainment of a basic tertiary qualification, when we assume it is. I have engaged with professors and so called leading minds in SA an the USA particularly and have found them very cagey, intimidating when they have to engage original thought and they than resort to the alphabet behind their names. I have previously raised this about our Public Intellectuals in SA. What do you think ?
