AN INTERESTING ENCOUNTER Just returned from giving my dog Bosco a run out on the track near my house, throwing his ball, I spotted a lady walking toward me with a female German Shepherd, dragging her on the leash. As I always do when I see other dogs on leash, I recalled Bosco to me, and placed him on leash. The lady being dragged by her dog, walked within 20 or 30 metres of me. The entire time her dog was going crazy on her leash, jumping up on its hind legs and vocalising. Bosco, happy to say, just stood there on a loose leash watching this other GSD. The lady told me shes ok, she just wants to socialise. I said, honestly you shouldnt be rewarding that behaviour. Look at my dog, nice and calm. For one thing she is displaying the wrong body language and projecting the wrong energy to the other dog, and that behaviour can trigger a reactive response in the other dog. Also I said, she should wait until her dog calms right down before allowing any type of socialising. The entire time her dog was going crazy on the leash. Her response she is always like that when she sees other dogs. I allow my dog when walking here to just be a dog, this is her time. I informed her that I was a dog trainer, and honestly she was going about it wrong. I said you are reinforcing anxiety in her, not only that she is pulling on the lead and becoming frustrated because you will not release her. Her come back then knocked me for a six. I am a dog trainer too. I instruct at 2 dog clubs, and have been training since 1972 My response, honestly you need to work on settling her. I then said no probs have a good day and walked on. As I could see she was getting agitated with me I looked back and yes her dog was still going crazy on the lead, dragging her down that path. Honestly is this what dog clubs are teaching these days? No wonder there are soooo many out of control and reactive aggressive dogs out there!
