AN OPEN LETTER TO MR. R.A. VERGARA, JR OF THE VARSITARIAN Many - TopicsExpress

AN OPEN LETTER TO MR. R.A. VERGARA, JR OF THE VARSITARIAN Many were outraged by The Varsitarians article on UST-AMVs performance in the October 2014 CPA Licensure Examinations. Not only AMV students, but also alumni, professors, and even a partner of one of the countrys Big Four auditing firms (who also happens to be a professor in the College). I am quite disappointed on how The Varsitarian, an institution that I have looked up to since college days, could release such article without considering the sensitivities of the people involved. I agree with Ms. Kristelle Batchelors infamous tweet that there shouldnt be any sugarcoating in journalism. Im also not saying that you should pad or hide figures. But you could have been more careful with your choice of words. As a journalist, it was your prerogative whether to highlight the positive side (a. more than half of the Thomasians passed; b. USTs 67.53% is higher than the national passing rate of 37.02%; c. USTs 67.53% this October is higher than the 39.88% during the July exams), or the negative side (a. USTs 67.53% in October 2014 is lower than the 89.65%in October 2013; b. There are no topnotchers), or both. Numbers are numbers. Yes, the college had shortcomings this October (and even last May). But Mr. Vergara, was it necessary to label the Thomasian examinees as delayed graduates and retakers? Was it necessary to attribute the slip in passing rate to the fact that the takers were not your ideal students? Years back, I was once one of those delayed graduates who took the exams, and that is the primary reason I was personally affected and hurt by your article. Hindi ko lang basta alam kung ano ang hirap na pinagdadaanan ng isang AMV student at ng isang examinee ng CPA Licensure Exams. I also know how it feels to fail, try to get back on my feet, and redeem myself by finally graduating and earning that three-letter word to place after my name. These Thomasian Alumni do not deserve this label. I know that you might have been just fighting for truth in journalism. I am not even asking for praise and accolades for them. Ang hinihingi ko lang, konting respeto mula sa isang kapwa Tomasino. varsitarian.net/breaking_news/20141016/ust_slips_in_cpa_board_exams
