AN altercation between two neighbours over the theft of a squirrel resulted yesterday in one having to pay the other $750 in compensation for injuries sustained. Chaguanas Magistrate Brahmanand Dubay passed the sentence on Keith Murray, who yesterday pleaded guilty to unlawfully assaulting his neighbour Daniel Abraham by beating. The incident occurred on June 1 at Gail Trace Extension, Palmiste in Chaguanas. On his initial court appearance Murray, pleaded not guilty and was granted bail. The case was scheduled to go on trial before Dubay yesterday when before it started, Murray changed his plea to guilty. In his defence, Murray told the court Abraham had stolen his squirrel from his yard. As such, Murray said he went to confront his neighbour about it and pushed him in the process. Court prosecutor Sgt Ken Ali noted a confrontation ensued and Abraham was hit on his mouth. Police were contacted and PC Abraham Joseph subsequently charged Murray with the unlawful assault of Abraham. The offence was contrary to section 4 of the Summary Offences Act, Chapter 11: 02. Yesterday the victim informed the court he suffered a “burst mouth inside out”. Dubay fined Murray $200 for the offence committed. The magistrate also ordered he pay Abraham $750 in compensation within 30 days or in default serve three months in jail. Before both neighbours left the courtroom, the magistrate remarked, “This is water under the bridge.”
