AND NOW FOR SOMETHING NON-ELECTION RELATED! 44 years ago, I kissed my very pregnant bride good-bye and headed out to a championship football game @ Virginia Minnesota. Mary, was going to her folks place for the weekend as it was an overnight trip for our ball club. I think we stopped in Cloquet for a brief practice and then proceeded on to Virginia... fed and settled the players into their hotel rooms etc. I drew the short straw apparently and had one of the radio announcers as my roomie. (He immediately got himself plastered and passed out rather early in the evening. I guessed he didnt travel well.) Anyway, I called my in-laws that evening to see how my wife was doing but got Lloyd (my father-in-law) who informed me that my wife, mother-in-law (Grace) and mother (Stella) were all at the hospital as things seemed to have taken a surprising acceleration in the baby area. After a few panicked tries, I got my mother on the phone at the hospital later that night and proceeded to get the blow by blow account of my first borns late evening arrival all the while the radio personality was snoring and drooling in the corner. My mother was laughing and laughing because my newborn son had a head of fuzzy white hair and looked like Winston Churchill, but thats another story. Mary was fine and the kid was big and healthy. Early the next morning, with Im sure the biggest-stupidest grin imaginable, I got to buy a couple of boxes of cheap cigars and hand them out to the coaches and players. His birth was announced at halftime and congratulations were broadcast statewide during the game. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOSHUA!!!!!
