…AND THE JOURNEY BEGINS Let me begin by saying congratulations to you on your admission to the most fabulous and prestigious citadel of advanced learning in Africa known far and wide as the Federal university of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). Now you earn a very rare privilege of being addressed as a FUNAABITE, a cachet so desired by many young Nigerians. At Mawuko, I could recall vividly in June 2011 as a Pre-degree Student when we organized the First Ever Annual INHURD Week and invited the Incumbent Vice Chancellor Prof. O.B Oyewole as our Distinguished Guest Speaker (then he was a lecturer at the Department of Food Science and Technology) to speak to us on the topic THE JOURNEY BEGINS while we waited patiently for the admission list. He spoke to us fatherly and with compassion on the realities of being an undergraduate. Some of these wise words of his will be the guiding light of my write-up. The University as we all know is that tertiary stage of education where we are molded to become a more advanced and useful component of the society. At the University, we enjoy considerable freedom. We have the liberty to decide what we want, what we do not want, what we want to be and what we do not want to be. We make friends with amazing individuals of diverse backgrounds and languages. We gain knowledge, maturity and experience. And we become classified personalities in learning and character. However, the end justifies the means as they say. As Freshers, what you get in the years to come will be the result of your actions and or inactions. Distractions will surely come in different appealing colors. But never lose focus of your very first purpose of being an undergraduate which is ACADEMICS. Extra curricula activities such as campus unionism, sports, socials etc. are merely secondary which is necessary but not compulsory. Be it Christian or Muslim, PUT GOD FIRST IN ALL YOUR DEALINGS. Avoid all forms of malpractices. Be tolerant and generous. Be your brother’s keeper and strive for Excellence always. Ultimately, love your books and read it always. As you begin this journey joyously, the roads may be rough and bumpy but you shall sojourn the land of FUNAAB successfully. It is my belief that this write-up will in its own little ways make a positive impact in your life. Stay blessed. With undiluted love from me to you, OYEDE, Oke Adeniyi fondly called EFIZY.
