ANGELS IN PASSIONIST HISTORY AND HERITAGE The Passionist founder, St. Paul of the Cross, had a great love for, devotion to and dependence on the Angles. He had at least two visions of St. Michael the Archangel. He name St. Michael, along with St. Joseph, as Protectors of the Passionist Congregation. At his first monastery church on Monte Argentario, Paul dedicated an altar to St. Michael the Archangel. Paul legislated that before his community recreation periods they would invoke the Holy Angels. Paul invoked the protection and assistance of the Angels before and during his travels. Before preaching a mission sermon or retreat conference, Paul wold pray to the Guardian Angels of all the people who would attend. PASCHAL MYSTERY There was the consoling Angel who strengthened Jesus in His agony in Gethsemani. An angel then appeared to him from heaven to strengthen him... (Luke 22:43). Tradition has it that this angel showed Jesus the countless souls down through all the ages who would be saved by His obedience to the Father and His sufferings in His Passion and death. Angels kept watch at the tomb. Suddenly there was a might earthquake, as the angels of the Lord descended from heaven, He came to the stone, rolled it back, and sat on it. In appearance he resembles flash of lightening while his garments were as dazzling as snow. The guards grew paralyzed with fear of him and fell down like dead men. Then the angel spoke, addressing the women: Do not be frightened. I know you are looking for Jesus the Crucified, but he is not here. He has been raised exactly as he promised. Come and see he place where he was laid. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: He has been raised from the dead and now goes ahead of you to Galilee where you will see him. That is the message I have for you (Matthew 28:2-7) Accounts of these angels at the tomb are found in other Gospels as well. In the Acts of the Apostles, after Jesus ascended into heaven, we see may incidents of the might activity of Angels in the life of the Church. A lot of these are pulled together in the breviary for the feasts of Saints Michael, Gabriel and Raphael (Sept 29), as well as the feat of the Guardian Angels (Oct 2). ~Teachings of our Mother Catherine Marie for her member Passionist Oblates.
