ANNOUNCING: Youth Empowerment Groups for youth with disabilities in Franklin, Delaware counties The Center for Disability Empowerment (CDE), is seeking interested youth with disabilities, ages 16 to 20, in Franklin and Delaware counties to become involved with new groups that focus on disability advocacy, independence, community connection, leadership and support. The groups will meet on a monthly basis and organize in their respective counties. Activities will be determined by the group members themselves. Group meetings will at times feature guest speakers who will talk on a variety of interesting and helpful topics. Items that will be covered in the groups will include Independent Living skills, active citizenship and leadership, advocacy skills development, as well as learning about recreation opportunities within the area. “We are pleased to make Youth Empowerment Groups available for central Ohio youth with disabilities. It is important to teach skills and to provide opportunities that promote independence, self-determination and involvement in one’s community,” said Sue Hetrick, CDE Executive Director. The CDE Youth Empowerment Groups will meet at two convenient locations. In Franklin County, the group will meet from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. every second Tuesday at Dodge Park Recreation Center, 667 Sullivant Rd., Columbus, OH 43215. The Delaware County group will meet from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. every third Tuesday at the Westerville Library, 126 S. State St., Westerville, OH 43081. Every group meeting is accessible, and needed accommodations will be provided. (Accomodation requests must be made at least one week in advance) There is no charge to participate, and registration is required. Transportation is not provided.
