Joan Lacueva passed away today at 65, the man whom without Lionel Messi may never have been a blaugrana.It was Lacueva who forked out 2,000 euros from his own pocket to pay for Messi’s first round of growth-hormone treatments in Barcelona. Why? Because the club directors and technical staff were delaying around, most of them not believing the investment in a slight 12 year old was good business, and for many months they didn’t deliver on promises made to the Messi family. So when the club did not pay for the medical treatments Leo needed, Lacueva stepped up and footed the bill so that he and Carles Rexach could have more time to convince the club to make the deal official. He was present that infamous day Messi was signed for Barça on a napkin. That napkin resides till this day with Lacueva, though there has been talk for some time it will be donated to the club museum. He was also a chief part of Andrés Iniesta signing on and during his time working with Espanyol, was instrumental once again in the career of Mauricio Pochettino.
