ANSWER to todays trivia question: One of the most important problems with the evidence on water breaking at term is related to Group B Strep. Almost all of the studies that we will talk about in the upcoming EBB article, including the famous “termPROM” study, were carried out before women in the U.S. had Group B strep screening and antibiotics if they were positive for GBS. Ultimately, the questions “What should a mother do if her water breaks before labor at term? Is induction or waiting for labor the better choice?” will remain controversial until another large-scale study is conducted that takes GBS treatment into account. [Vaginal exams are a whole different story... they did track vaginal exams in the research and the findings were very powerful. We will talk more about THAT part of the evidence in the article!!]
