The subject of Trieste has been a hot matter since the Second World War. The last country, established in 1947 by the United Nations and situated between Italy and Yugoslavia never achieved full independence at that time due to the rising of the Cold War. To resolve its fate it was decided to split the Free Territory of Trieste into two halves, given in 1954 for temporary administration to Italy and Yugoslavia. The decision was wise for a security reasons and the people of Trieste accepted it, believing that the new countries would keep their promises of Trieste having special status and being helped financially and protected as signed in the Memorandum of London of 5th October 1954. Italy, having lost the Second World War lost sovereignty over Trieste, and no other valid document after the Treaty of Paris in 1947 could ever change this. Sixty years have passed since the Free Territory of Trieste lost its identity and started being taxed illegally to the bone. The International Free Port of Trieste is now dead. Politics and corruption made the people of the territory unemployed and searching for help. Ignored by Italy, Trieste is calling now for an intervention from the United Nations Organization to re-establish legality about taxation in the Off Shore Area of the Free Port of Trieste. Italian Police are now accusing the people of Trieste of terrorism and prosecuting them as such as they claim for their freedom from a country which hasn’t got any authority except for administrating one of the possibly richest harbours in Europe. “Surely there’s been interest in killing the place in order to increase Italian income in other ports of the Italian peninsula” says Gabe Antoni (Antonsich). “Historically our people have been oppressed as Italy invaded after the First World Wart, they changed our surnames into Italian and killed those who didn’t want to speak exclusively Italian, and our grandparents told us that, it was ethnic cleansing. We were Austrian after 1382 and before Trieste was always in war with Venice for supremacy of the Adriatic Sea trade-market in the” he adds. “We have never felt, nor been, Italians. Italy re-wrote history by telling school children we always were”. “I am a stateless person as all my brothers down there, I feel like Tibetans around the world when they have to show their Chinese passport…” Very strong words considering the fact that this is happening inside the European Union. “I had to close down my shop as I was taxed illegally at 68% by their government; there is no place for us there. Only imported people from other parts of Italy get jobs, so I had to leave my native country, leaving behind my children in order to survive and send money back, it’s inadmissible for a place which compares its potential to Gibraltar”, he continues. “Straight after the arrival of the Italians, in 1954, 20,000 people from Trieste were given a free-ticket to Australia in order to clear the territory further. 150,000 people have left Trieste in the last 60 years looking for fortune in different countries. We have no identity anymore. We want our freedom before it is too late, as the Cold War is over, and we don’t need any kind of ‘corrupted protection’ any longer” he ends. Things are now evolving as the independence movement gathers strenght day by day and after demonstrations in Trieste (8.000 people marched last September), and in Vienna (Austria). A delegation of people representing the Free Territory of Trieste will come in London on 6th October to peacefully demonstrate, and walk to get public attention, from Trafalgar Square to the UN building where they will ask for immediate intervention. Different types of Italian propaganda, abuse and illicit behavior have been reported to the European Court. We’ll keep you updated.
