APPALACHIAN MEMORIES: Its been on my mind to say, that sometimes, I feel that were doing our kids today a disservice. Its natural for people to want for their kids to have it better than they did when they were growing up, and Im as bad as the next guy. But when I think back over my life, Ive begun to realize how rich I was growing up. We never had a lot money wise, but we had plenty to eat, clean clothes and most importantly love. We didnt have video games and so on, we made our own games and used our imaginations to the fullest in having fun. We roamed the hills pretending to be explorers and so on. We played horse shoes and basketball on a hard packed dirt court, half of it was the road and traffic always stopped until there was a break in play. And in winter we built snow forts and had snowball fights and explored things and places anew because every thing was fresh and new in the snow. Now, we have snowball fights and so on via computers. But there some things that Ill never be able to share with them. Things like, every Sunday after Church, the whole family that still lived in the area would go to my Grandpa and Grandma Stacys for a big lunch, chicken & dumplings and the works, all for a long time after Grandma got an electric stove, was cooked on a wood burning cook stove. I dont know how she did it, but it was her joy to cook these big meals and I never failed to stand in awe as she would adjust this thing, and move this to there and something there to this. And Ive never had anything that tasted better that a biscuit and gravy breakfast cooked on that big old monstrosity. And the cook-room, which was a room in the rear of the house where it wouldnt over- heat the house in Summer, always had a box of apples there from Grandpas june-apple tree, always smelled like apple pie. I did attend the first grade in a one-roomed school house, and yes, I did walk to school, etc, etc, but it was just two houses up from where I lived, about a quarter mile or so and I actually could walk uphill to school both ways depending on my route to, or from, school. The 1st grade students were seated at 2 very large tables and grades 2 thru 8 were each in a row of desks according to their grade. It seemed to me that we learned more that way because we absorbed the lessons the other grades were being taught. Anyway, theres just so much I wish my kids had known but this is why Ive begun to share these stories with them so maybe they could, at least, get a little idea of how wonderful I had it growing up. Putting it into words though, is hard for me, but anyway I thought Id share a few of my memories with them, and you.And I hope to be able to share many more. Maybe something in here will bring some great memories back for you as well. Thanks for listening. Blessings
