APPEAL FOR RELIEF AID TO VICTIMS OF SUPERTYPHOON HAIYAN IN CENTRAL PHILIPPINES Dear Friends, On Sunday morning, the APBF Office and the APBAid Committee received from Feraz Legita, the Acting APBAid Director, the attached report and appeal concerning the devastation caused by super-typhoon Haiyan. While we are waiting for an updated report and appeal, We are sending you this initial appeal notice in the meantime. We now know that the devastation is much worst that was being reported by the NDRRMC of the Philippines on Sunday. Since Sunday, our team has been working with the Convention of Philippines Baptist Churches in assessing the damage in various location. They are also been in contact with at least three other Baptist conventions in the Philippines assisting them as they seek to respond to the disaster (the Convention in Visayas & Mindano of the Southern Baptist Churches, Luzon Convention of Southern Baptist Churches, and the Baptist Conference of the Philippines). Please consider prayerfully and sacrificially the situation in the Philippines. Background: Super typhoon Haiyan made its first landfall in Samar and Leyte in November 8 with sustained winds of 185 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 220 kph according to National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) leaving Tacloban City devastated and many lives lost. Following landfalls in western Visayas greatly affected provinces of Capiz and Iloilo in Panay island and the northern part of Negros island. Official report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) as of 09 November 2013, a total of 944,597 families (4,283,636 persons) were affected in 1,363 barangays (villages), 39 cities, 229 municipalities in 36 provinces in the Visayas, Southern Tagalog and Northern Mindanao regions. A total of 71,623 families (330,914 persons) are being served inside 1,223 evacuation centers. There were 138 deaths, 14 injured and 4 missing. But latest news this morning from ABS-CBN, November 10, it was feared to have 1,200 deaths in Tacloban City, Leyte alone. The need for relief assistance: APBAid in coordination with the Convention of Philippine Baptist Churches through its Development Ministries received information re destruction and needs in the hardly hit areas in the provinces of Capiz, Iloilo and North Negros where majority of CPBC churches are situated. CPBC would like to assist in the immediate needs of families that are food, drinking water, blankets and mats. Relief operation is difficult because of roads destroyed and flooded. Many areas could not be reached yet. Also electricity and communication line are damaged. CPBC is coordinating with government officials to be able to reach the affected areas. PLEASE PRAY FOR THE PEOPLE AFFECTED BY SUPERTYPHOON HAIYAN IN CENTRAL PHILIPPINES. THEY NEED OUR SUPPORT AND ASSISTANCE.
