ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO DO THAT? Certainly one of the tough things about our profession is when a Client asks for a design change that you know deep in your design soul it is not a good move, but they have dug their feet in the dirt and they are not going to budge. And you want to push but not to the point they are thinking they should hire someone else. Although Ive been unemployed for 6 months, Im wrapping up drawings for my 5th house design, so Ive actually been pretty busy. And instead of having others do the drawings, I get to do all the CDs - where before in an office, I got delegated writing specs. One of my clients has a standard ranch style home that he wanted to add a mother-in-law suite and then renovate the entire house. I envisioned something modern, HOWEVER they envisioned Colonial. And I was happy with my Mid Florida Colonial aesthetics when yesterday I receive a call that the 4 over 1 SH 2650 windows we had all needed to change to 5026, so they could put more furniture under the windows. The windows now look like Miami Awning Windows, which are very appropriate for a Florida Ranch, but they dont want to change any of the other Colonial details, like the Tuscan columns, or the Dormers. I tried to explain proportion of the windows and showed them plenty of photos of Colonial Ranch Homes. They remained unconvinced. So I do what Im told. One day when Im a Santiago Calatrava, I will tell clients what they are going to get, but until then I bend over, cough, and say thank you.
