ARLINGTON -- All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve broke Bob Watsons Astros record for hits prior to the All-Star break with 124 in Monday nights game against the Rangers, but not without a little help from instant replay. Altuve, who learned Sunday he had been elected to his second All-Star team by the players, was originally called out at first base by umpire Vic Carapazza in the fourth inning on a grounder he hit to Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus. Astros manager Bo Porter challenged, and the call was quickly overturned after replay clearly showed Altuve beat the throw. Altuve then broke Watsons record with a single to left field in the top of the eighth. Altuve entered Monday leading the Major League in hits and the American League with a .337 batting average. He also leads the AL in stolen bases with 38, including 25 in a row without being caught. The Astros have been successful on 10 out of 17 replay challenges this year. Because the call was overturned, Porter retained his ability to challenge another play during the game. No manager may challenge more than two plays in a game. Once the manager has exhausted his ability to challenge plays during the game and after the beginning of the seventh inning, the crew chief may choose to invoke instant replay on any reviewable call.
