ARMY HAS FUNDED POLITICIANS AND BEAURECRATS FOR LEASE EXTENTION.. Srinagar, Oct 11: The Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Geelani Friday slammed the J&K government over its ‘proposal’ to extend lease to Army for using the Toasmaidan meadow in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district as a firing range. “We have learned from credible sources that money has been paid to ministers and bureaucrats for the purpose. And for their personal interests, they are now pleading for extension of the lease agreement,” said Geelani in a statement. He warned that the amalgam “won’t stay silent if the lease is extended.” “We will oppose the move tooth and nail,” he said. “The Hurriyat is closely monitoring the issue. We will launch a strong protest after taking the people of the affected area into confidence,” Geelani said, adding that “the state authorities for power and money have decided to sell all our resources and assets to the people in New Delhi. They don’t care about their obligations towards the nation and are detrimental to the society like renegades.” Geelani said: “Ikhwanis (government gunmen) killed unarmed and innocent civilians, but the mainstream politicians, while playing as stooges, handed over all resources of the State for their petty interests.” Commenting on the statement of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Toasmaidan, Geelani said: “They (rulers) have admitted that due to military drills in the area, the civilian population has suffered immensely. Neither rent for the land has been paid by Army nor has any compensation been provided to the families of the deceased and injured.” “We have decided to take up the case of victims and disabled persons with the international community and human rights organizations. Indian forces are a major risk for precious human lives in Jammu and Kashmir,” Geelani said. He said: “Though the rulers admit that no rent is being paid, the Omar Abdullah-led government informed the Assembly that they are considering the case and the allied lease agreement is under examination. It is an extreme form of cowardice. Since 1947 pro-India politicians are playing a criminal role and are looting and exploiting the resources of the State for their personal gains and are the main cause for destruction and devastation in the State,” Geelani said, adding “as Army has approached the administration for an extension in lease agreement, politicians are playing a very active role in the deal. Army has funded politicians and some bureaucrats for it.” Geelani said, “It is feared that the administration in a secret manner and without making it public would approve the lease case after the Durbar moves to Jammu.”
