AROUND THE GROUNDS MATCH REPORTS: FAWKNER PARK SUNDAYS Date: Sunday, 12 October 2014 Times: 12:00pm & 2:20pm Game 1: BAD INTENTIONS v THE HIT WICKETS Game 2: MAN DATE VIIII v FIZZBANGERS OK well the Fawkner Park Sunday comp kicked off beautifully, with some high scores and brutal batting being the strong-point on a day full of great cricket. Lets have a read below to see how these two games played out, first up: Game 1: BAD INTENTIONS (170/4 off 20) defeated THE HIT WICKETS (158/7 off 20) by 12 runs **The Bad Intent holds The Hits at bay in closely fought trench warfare** The BIs batted first today and were consistent throughout, with Rooh Ullah (17 off 13) and Hashim Khan (blazing with 21 off 8) setting a nice platform early. The excellently surnamed Haroon Afridi (already a cult favourite) then paired up with Fateh Ullah, with Haroon playing a meat and gravy type innings of 52* off 37 balls and Fateh showing superb support and technique in glassing 28 off 24. The BIs finished strongly, with Shahan Shah slamming 30* off 17 balls, Adnan Ahmad doing a here for a good time not a long time in smacking 8 off 4, and a suitably supreme cameo of 14* off 6 balls by the majestically named Imran Khan. With the ball, The Hit Wickets (THW) relied upon Chris Edwards, who jagged 2/16 off his 4 overs in an awesome display of clutch t20 bowling. Nick Silk (1/34 off 4) also bagged a handy wicket along the way. In response, THW would lose opener David Exner (0 off 3) and actual David Boon (the names in these teams are just amazing, even if untrue) for 6 off 8, but then Nick Corp and Nick Silk combined in a brutal stand, peeling back the momentum with a series of boundaries and classy strokeplay. Nick departed for a rapid 27 off 14 just as he found his next gear, and then Silk holed out for 43 off 31 balls just as he looked set to retire. Jonny Barreiro (32 off 25) did his utmost to will his team over the line, but a 2nd ball duck for Chris Edwards meant that The Hits fell just 12 runs shy in this closely fought match. With the ball, and in a man-of-the-match earning spell, Shahan Shah was the difference. He snared a stunning 4/29 off 4 overs and was impactful throughout. Adnan Ahmad bagged 2/27 off 4 in an excellent supporting spell, wonderful figures in their own right. Sadiq Shah earned his stripes by oiling out 1/22 off 4 overs in a cunning spell of economical bliss. And that was that, a close one and a great one. Man of the Match: Shahan Shah (BAD INTENTIONS) - 30* off 17 balls & 4/29 off 4 overs Scorecard: lastmanstands.spawtz/SpawtzSkin/Fixtures/GameDetails.aspx?FixtureId=96233&LeagueId=1390&SeasonId=59&DivisionId=0 Game 2: MAN DATE VIII (227/3 off 19.4) defeated FIZZBANGERS (225/4 off 20) by 5 wickets and with 1 ball to spare **The bromances conquer Everest-esque chase with 1 ball to spare!** Wow, it sucked to be a bowler in this game. 452 runs were blasted off 199 balls for the loss of just 7 wickets. Le Fizz would bat first and go berserk from the outset, with openers Ankur Paul and Wendell Vagg cranking the volume up to 11 immediately before Wendell was out caught for 17 off 10. The Fizz then lost the legendary Phil Maranzano for a 3rd ball quacker, and things were a bit darker now. Enter Anthony Gibson, who joined forces with Ankur and slammed The Fizz back into contention, the pair brutal on all types of bowlers and all lines and all lengths. Anthony retired for a blazing 50* off 20 balls, and Ankur did the same, retiring 53* off 31 after weathering the storm of the early wickets. Jason Gibbons couldnt get going, out for 2 off 3, but then the tail truly wagged, with Indika Rajanayake hammering 49 off 23, Tommy Rose (a Fizzbangers staple by now it must be said), blasting a superlative 37* off 15, and Matt McIntosh going all MS Dhoni by finishing with 17* off 7. With the ball, as to be expected with a 225 batting performance, the figures made for some grim reading. John McIldowie (1/27 off 4) and Tom Ryan (1/25 off 4) were contextually stunning today, banging down a combined 8 overs for just 52 runs and 2 wickets! Richard Goodwin (1/35 off 3) and James Clapham (1/54 off 4) were good enough to jag a wicket each amidst some chronically good batting, and Edward Hughes bagged a catch as keeper to round out the highlights of the bowling performance. OK, so 226 to win, 100 balls to do it, Man Date started cautiously, with McIldowie accumulating 11 off 9 before holing out in the deep. James Clapham (19 off 16) also did his best to lay a platform before he was unfortunately run out. At the other end, keeper-batsman Ed Hughes had been playing nicely, and he joined forces with Tom Ryan and this is where things really kicked into gear for the Bromancers. Ed hammered his way to 52* off 26 balls and Tom blazed his way to an epic 51* off 18 in a stunning partnership that turned the tide swiftly on The Fizz collective. Oli Wurm (20 off 11) pitched in with a beauty of a cameo before Richard Goodwin and Patrick Nestel, batting at 7 and 8 no less, linked up for a truly incredible partnership. The pair hit a combined 74 runs in just 5.4 overs, stealing The Man Date 8 home with literally 1 ball to spare! Nestel was great in hitting 30* off 14, however even greater praise should be heaped upon Goodwin, whose nerveless 44* off 15 was literally incredible! Once more, the bowling card is a big jagged, and as a fellow bowler I dare not to name and shame, but Anthony Gibson was extremely reliable, bagging the most economical figures of the day in snaring 1/21 off 4 overs. Indika jagged 1/17 off 2 overs and Ankur Paul took a neat catch as keeper, but that is where the good reading ends for the Fizz bowling card. What a stunning match this was, cant wait to see the rematch in a few short weeks! Men of the Match: Tom Ryan (MAN DATE VIII) - 51* off 18 balls & 1/25 off 4 overs AND Anthony Gibson (FIZZBANGERS) - 50* off 20 balls & 1/21 off 4 overs Scorecard: lastmanstands.spawtz/SpawtzSkin/Fixtures/GameDetails.aspx?FixtureId=96234&LeagueId=1390&SeasonId=59&DivisionId=0 Author: LMS_Dayne
