AS A SOMETIME FREELOADER WHILE IN COLLEGE, MY AUNT PAULINE MADE ME DRIVE HER TO VISIT OUR KIN IN A NURSING HOME. ONE GREAT UNCLE IN A THANKSGIVING VISIT MADE IT CLEAR THAT HE WANTED TO BE LEFT ALONE. NAME AND NURSING HOME ARE FICTICIOUS. THIS IS COPYRIGHTED-ASK FOR COPY PRIVILEGE. Thanksgiving Visit to Uncle CHES, 98, Smiths Grove Nursing Home ===================== Dwell not how lonely I may be While I unwrap in haunted dreams Thanksgivings past with family In tales to fill a thousand reams. I little note nor really care My attitude makes others jade, So let me sleep in my wheelchair And next turn off my hearing aid. I see Grandma who happily sings While basting turkey, smelling good, She waves fresh pie but hatchet brings- You first go out and chop more wood! My Grandpa Ike and Uncle Fred Again at Perryville pitch a fight, Uncivil War where neither bled, My Yankee Fred and Rebel Ike. My Mom pumps taters, sister snores, My cousins tag, and then go hide. My Pop on radios baseball scores, And Spinster Anne drags dogs outside. The bedlam stops with sumptuous spread, Then round two tables, each a plate: A grace is droned by Uncle Fred, Who said, Lets eat, the preachers late! This day hangs long, snows getting steep, And overnight our kin must stay. Now this is where I fall asleep, In silent night, NOW go away.
