AS PROMISED, HERE ARE THE NOTES I TOOK DURING YOUR DISCUSSION OF THE NEW FACEBOOK PAGE: Here’s the notes from the planning meeting for the creation of the new Facebook page. It’s a requirement to complete your Sow What and Justice journeys. You need to come up with a good name. Think long and hard about this, because the name is everything. You need to draw people to it, so it needs to have some interest. Names you came up with Monday are: What’s in your stomach Food? Food or Not? I Can’t Even ... Do You Know What You’re Eating? FrankenFood Food Things of all of those, FrankenFood is the most catchy. a, b and c are kinda tame ... not sure you’d attract many teens, which should be your target audience. d seems too unrelated to the subject. Anyway, think about it and maybe even brainstorm with your friends at lunch and see if you can come up with something really killer. You need a timeline image of some kind and a profile picture. You all need to agree on both of these. You can create something in art class or find something that’s not copyrighted online, or take a photo, whatever. Before you post, make sure you’re not spreading misinformation or exaggeration. Everyone needs to look at GMOs and read the history and look at pros and cons. Everyone needs to look at the history of pesticides. Everyone needs to look at the history of food additives, colorings and artificial preservatives. There will be three main themes unless you think of more: Additives/Preservatives and Colorings (Adrienne and McKenzie), GMOs/Highly Processed Foods/ Food Footprint (Anna) and Eating Healthy or Making Healthier Choices (Deborah). Anna wants to do the post on Coca Cola. Use websites that end in edu, gov, org ... make sure you look at more than one website before you post something as a fact. some ideas for things you can post: additives and preservatives and colorings x2 = Adrienne and McKenzie Photos of labels and describe what’s in our favorite foods like soda and chips and cookies or rice dishes ... picking a particular one and describing its effects. Like aspertame, for example. Does everyone use these things? for example, which countries ban the most dyes or preservatives? history of preservatives is it political in any way? Do they want us to be fat? Do these things cause weight gain as well as the other horrible things they cause? food isn’t meant to last forever. What does it mean when your fruit cup from a chain restaurant lasts a week without rotting on your kitchen counter? GMOs, highly processed, and food footprint = Anna Where does your food come from? What’s wrong with eating foods out of season? What does GMO mean and why is it good or bad? good things about GMOs and bad things about GMOs. Can you present both sides of the argument? Eating healthy -- making healthier choices = Deborah Is “natural” necessarily healthy? some examples: citric acid how do artificial sweeteners work and are they healthy (I know this will be covered in other categories but it’s OK since it’s so prevalent.) If you had to avoid one thing on your food label, what should it be?
