ASCL response to Secretary of State’s speech to the Conservative Party Conference “We are pleased to hear Nicky Morgan is committed to developing well-rounded young people, and that she intends to make this the fifth priority for the DfE. “In her speech Nicky Morgan identified careers guidance and work experience as areas for development. School leavers need to be resilient, determined, creative, able to solve complex problems and communicate confidently. However, the space to develop these traits has been squeezed by an out of kilter accountability culture. It will not be achieved by bolt-on curriculum solutions or yet more inspection. It is at the very heart of what education is for. Accountability measures need to be slimmer and smarter in order to give schools the flexibility to develop these characteristics in children. “Nicky Morgan says she is committed to trusting the profession and we welcome this. We need to be clear about what this means. In a self-improving system, teachers and leaders must be trusted to be agents of their own accountability. ASCL’s blueprint, currently under consultation, sets out what a self-improving system looks like. Government has a role in defining a public accountability framework with a small number of ambitious goals. How this then is achieved should be determined by teachers and leaders. “Schools improve when the quality of teaching improves. This happens most effectively when teachers work together and learn effective strategies from each other, within and across schools.” Whats your view?
