ASUU STRIKE: MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS As the Executive directive issued at lecturers to resume work before the 4h of December or face the sack hangs over their heads like the sword of Damocles, a lot of questions remain unanswered and spell perpetual doom for the nations tertiary education sector. Alas the following questions remain unanswered 1. Is it right to assume that the Government has torn up its agreement with ASUU even before the ink on the paper is yet to dry? 2. Where is the 100 Billion Government claims was released to settle arrears and earned allowances of lecturers for ASUUs stance is they will not resume work until they receive transaction notifications (alert) from their respective banks? 3. Is it legally and morally expedient for the Government to sack lecturers without following due process? No case has been filed at the industrial court hence the ASUU strike has not been declared illegal thus any punitive measure is bound to be overturned by a court of competent jurisdiction as the precedence shown by the sack of the Unilorin Lecturers that was overturned with an associated award of damages to the lecturers. 4. How does the Government intend to force lecturers to work if they dont want to work, defying the age old proverb of you can drag a horse to the water but you cant force it to drink? 5. If the Government sacks lecturers who will replace them? Primary school teachers? Secondary school teachers? Graduate assistants? Soldiers? 6. How soon will the new lecturers take up their appointments especially since it takes 6 months to a year for one to process employment in the Nigerian Public Service thus what will the students be doing in the meantime? Indeed the ASUU strike has gone on for far too long hence the Governments attempt at brinkmanship in which a high stakes poker game has been drawn up against the Government with ASUU ready to call the bluff of GEJ and his paid jabroni, Nyesom Wike. But alas the most pertinent question remains unanswered. Will the Governments attempt of using threats and breaking agreements lead to a better Public University Sector that can compete with not only the Private Religious Universities but also compete with the world at large. If GEJ , his henchmen and jabroni fail to uplift the Universities, Goodluck will be judged by history as the first Graduate President of Nigeria who midwifed the demise of Nigerian Universities, a feat neither years of military rule or Boko Haram have been able to achieved.
