ATTEMPTING TO REASSURE THE ALARMED, WHILE INFORMING THE UNCONCERNED? Almost any brief online post or reply can easily be misinterpreted. While I may not feel as alarmed as some who share reports of thefts or even suspicious people, I definitely appreciate their intentions. Im also disappointed in the recent posts which appear to be not just dismissive, but may also seek to make fun at the expense of a concerned neighbor. In a modest effort to help bridge that gap, Im posting this link. If it works correcly, clicking on it will bring up a MAP with balloons showing locations of property crimes within 1.5 miles of Hawthorne @ Miller St, April-July 2014. [I chose this site because I prefer the way it permits using a specific address, changing radius, choosing date range, selecting type of crime or police report, etc. - then ZOOM in/out. Plus, you may easily toggle between the map and a (downloadable) LIST of reports (from nearest to most distant). The parameters I chose cover all of Ardmore Neighborhood within Bus-40 ~ Silas Creek Pkwy ~ Peters Crk Pkwy boundaries over the recent 4 months of warmer weather. You may easily change the search from Property crime reports to Suspicious Activity reports. Click on a specific balloon for details [Please note that some balloons represent locations with multiple reports for the selected period. Ex: At/near NCBH or a retail location or apt bldg] One of my observations helps me appreciate (besides different personal attitudes) why some people may seem alarmist and others may act so dismissive. The pattern of crime report balloons is more concentrated close to NCBH & downtown, as well as along major streets like Hawthorne, Knollwood, Miller, etc. At the SAME time, several large areas have few if any reports - in particular, Historic Ardmore WEST of Miller St. [For those who like to dismiss posts reporting suspicious activities - the reports filed with WSPD also tend to reflect where the property crimes are committed.] So, neighbors, I intend for this to help raise the awareness where appropriate AND to provide reassuring information for other situations. I definitely hope that Im not feeding anyones OCD on one hand, nor others difficult attitudes on the other. Crime IS a problem. Its also MORE of a problem for the naive, uninformed and ill-prepared. I like Ardmore because its so full of good citizens who deserve support like this.
