ATTENTION BEND RESIDENCE!!! COUGAR SIGHTING!!! I am a local photographer, and tonight at 9:30pm, while hiking back down Pilot Butte, I had a close encounter with what I believe was a juvenile cougar. Had I not switched my head lamp from flood to spot and looked off the path, I would have never caught its eyes and noticed it was stalking me. It froze and so did I, for about 15-30 seconds. I put my tripod above my head and grasped my knife in the other, I yelled and shook my hands and tripod in the air. It winced at my fanfare and flanked to my left, I yelled and stomped again, and then it sprinted a couple hundred feet up the open slide area on the south side of the butte in a split second! It appeared to be darker in color and not blond as I would think. Could have been the shadows and lighting. It sat at the top edge of that slide area and watched me, I kept my headlamp on it so I could see its glowing eyes. As I was walking backwards it would occasionally inch down the slope, never looking away from me. Once I got far enough down the paved path to where it was out of line of sight, I made a fast B-Line to the truck in the parking lot. Scary thought… where there is cubs there is a momma! I feel lucky! Be careful out there yall! Just cause you are in the middle of town doesnt mean shit. We live in a wild area. Dont forget we moved into their land.
