D “Tea For Three” benefit performance reveals insights from three former First Ladies. What is it like for a woman when her husband becomes the President of the United States – and she is suddenly thrust into the spotlight? On January 24th, 2015 at 7:00 PM, a special performance of “Tea For Three: Lady Bird, Pat & Betty” will reveal humorous, yet thought-provoking insights into the lives of three First Ladies: Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon, and Betty Ford. Emmy Award-winning New York actor Elaine Bromka will explore the hopes, fears, quirks and loves of these notable women in, what Mrs. Nixon called, “the hardest unpaid job in the world.” The Vero Beach Branch of the American Association of University Women is producing this one-night performance. Proceeds are earmarked for AAUW scholarships for women continuing their educations at IRSC. Bromka developed this one-woman stage play with playwright Eric H. Weinberger. Previously, she toured opposite Rich Little in the play “The Presidents,” impersonating the last eight First Ladies. Intrigued by all these women’s stories, Bromka teamed with Weinberger to focus on three especially remarkable women — Johnson, Nixon, and Ford. Their warm, whimsical, and deeply moving exploration of three fascinating First Ladies has been playing around the country for several years – and this past June, with Meryl Streep as one of its chief funders, the show opened Off-Broadway to gratifyingly strong reviews. Especially in this time of political polarization, “Tea For Three” is refreshingly entertaining and informative.
