AUCKLAND LEADS THE WAY IN HOUSING RELIEF The Auckland Council - TopicsExpress

AUCKLAND LEADS THE WAY IN HOUSING RELIEF The Auckland Council Housing Action Plan Stage 1, released in December 2012, identified Auckland currently has a shortfall of new dwellings of around 20,000-30,000. Recently passed regulations have declared 11 Special Housing Areas (SHAs) to address this issue. These are: Papakura, East Tamaki, Pukekohe, Hobsonville, Kumeu, West Harbour, Orakei and Weymouth. The Government estimates up to 6,000 new homes will be built in these areas in a first step to try to solve Aucklands housing crisis. Auckland Council has set up the Housing Project Office (HPO) to assist with the Council’s obligations under the Auckland Housing Accord and processing of applications for Special Housing Areas. The HPO has the following responsibilities: • Integrating housing policy and delivery; • Implementing the Housing Acting Plan; • Delivering on the Auckland Housing Accord; • Ensuring infrastructure is in place to support SHA’s and other growth areas within the Rural Urban Boundary. The second set of SHA’s are currently being considered by the HPO and the Council has indicated that these will be publicly announced later this year or early next year. SOUCRCE: REINZ
