AUM: THE FIRST AND LAST UTTERANCE Life Beyond Ego Swami Muktananda Yati What shall we call the time that seems to work within our minds? We can call it psychological time. The psychological time is very different from the chronological time and very often clashes occur between the two within our minds. Such an incongruity arises because our personal or psychological time continually varies according to our personal experiences of pain and pleasure. This is a common human experience. While the flow of time appears dead slow in times of grief, it appears extremely fast when we are happy. Even when lovers exchange their sweet nothings for hours together, they would never feel the passage of time at all. Hours would be just seconds for them. This being the case, how can we ever understand time accurately? From where does time come? We must realize that chronological or external time does not bring about any problem or difficulty in our lives. It applies to all creatures in the universe. By four or five in the morning, the cocks will begin to crow. They know when they should crow. In all creatures there is a biological clock as part of their genetic constitution. There is such a clock in our body, too. The rising of the sun produces certain chimes on it, which wakes us up. In the same way it wakes up the birds, plants and all the other systems on the earth. From the radiation of sun’s energy, all creatures become aware of time. Hence, this chronological time is applicable to all creatures alike. But psychological time, which is more relevant in the case of human beings, is of a different nature. Psychological time causes problems for us alone, because our yesterdays belong only to us. Several persons whom we loved in the past are now no more. So our yesterdays, filled with the painful memories of our loved ones, have a strong hold on our minds. In your case the experience may not be the same. May be your yesterdays were full of delightful joy spent with your parents and grandparents. You must remember that your tomorrows are moulded by your yesterdays. That is, time itself acquires form by the workings of your mind. Our past is always controlling us. Actually liberation from the past itself is Self-realization. to be continued..
