AUM: THE FIRST AND LAST UTTERANCE Life Beyond Ego Swami Muktananda Yati Even if we study the entire modern science exhaustively, we will not find in anything about that which is beyond time. Stephen Hawking’s book ‘A Brief History of Time’ created great sensation in the world of science and instantly became an international best seller. Due to a motor neuron disease Hawking is confined to a wheel chair. A tracheotomy operation removed his ability to speak also. He writes and speaks using a speech synthesizer and a personal computer mounted on his wheel chair. But no one has written the history of eternity or the history of that which is beyond time. We have no curiosity to know about that which is beyond time. So Mandukya Upanishad does not become a best seller. What a paradox! The paradox of life is that man is always drawn towards ideas and objects that are silly, superficial, and transient. And he never gives a thought to eternity or immortality. This is a great tragedy. Why is that we never contemplate on eternity? We repeatedly exalt the glory and greatness of our tradition. Yet why don’t we enquire into its source, which is eternity? The Upanishad provides the answer. We can understand it in each of the mantras of Mandukya Upanishad. First it makes a threefold division of time – past, present and future. Then it begins to unfold the mystery of that which is beyond time – yat cha anyat trikala atitam. So we are learning about time. The following mantra teaches us about the depths of the mind – about its unconscious, subconscious and conscious aspects. to be continued..
