AUSTIN — A conservative student group at the University of Texas is organizing a controversial event this week in which students will be rewarded with $25 gift cards to “catch” volunteers posing as illegal immigrants. The UT chapter of the Young Conservatives of Texas, which caused a stir in September by holding an affirmative action bake sale, said it will host an event called “Catch an Illegal Immigrant.” It’s scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesday in the school’s West Mall. The basic premise: Up to five YCT volunteers will spread out wearing name tags that read “illegal immigrant.” Any UT student can approach them, flash a student ID, proclaim the words “Border Patrol” and take them back to the YCT table to cash in on the Visa gift card. The rationale for the event, according to YCT: to drum up campus-wide discussion about the topic of illegal immigration.
