Sanitarium produces a number of food products suitable for export markets that require Halal certification - although many of these products are also sold within Australia, we do not use this certification as a marketing tool and hence our domestic retail products currently do not carry a symbol on pack. The Halal Certification Authority of Australia is Sanitarium’s Halal certification body. It is recognised and approved by the Federal Government’s Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service for export purposes. The certification costs for Halal are borne by Sanitarium, to cover annual process inspection costs. The costs are in line with other certification costs that Sanitarium incurs, for example quality and food safety inspections, and in our view are of an amount that covers little more than the direct costs of the certification authority. There are no royalties paid to any organisation from product sales.
