AUSTRALIA THIS IS ONE BIGGEST BLUNDER COMMITTED BY THE IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT WHICH PUT THE PERSONNEL DETAILS OF ASYLUM SEEKERS IN DETENTION CENTER ON WEBSITE ON 11TH FEB.2014 THEN IMMEDIATELY REMOVED AND NOW IMMIGRATION MINISTER UNDER FIRE AND EVEN ASKING MEDIA TO SEND BACK ALL THE DETAILS IF OBTAINED BY THEM BY IMMIGRATION GROUPS ASKING GOVT HOW IT HAPPENED AND WHAT IS SURETY WILL NOT HAPPEN IN FUTURE AS IT PUT AT RISKS THE LIFE OF ASYLUM SEEKERS DUE TO HUGE SECURITY BREACH BY GOVT 20TH FEB.2014 Australia’s Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Scott Morrison, has advised his department’s secretary to take appropriate disciplinary action against the personals responsible for providing access to a file that contained the personal details of the asylum seekers in the Australian detention centers. The Minister has also asked the media publications which may had the access to the private information to return all copies to the immigration department. Labor’s immigration spokesman Richard Marles calls it the most significant breaches of privacy in Australian history. Green party has asked the Minister to clarify how he will stop such incidents happening in future. Department of Immigration and Border Protection’s website on 11 February 2014 released an immigration detention statistics report that inadvertently provided access to the underlying data source which was used to collate the report content including private information of detainees held in a mainland detention facility, on Christmas Island, or in a community detention program. Scott Morrison has said in a press release, “This is an unacceptable incident. I have asked the department Secretary to keep me informed of the actions that have been initiated, including any disciplinary measures that may be taken, as appropriate.” The Minister further added, “Immediate steps were taken to remove the documents from the department’s website immediately after the department became aware of the breach from the media.” “I am advised the department has ensured all possible channels to access this information are closed and I have sought assurances that this will not occur again,” Scott Morrison said. “This appears to be one of the most significant breaches of privacy in Australia’s history,” Richard Marles, Labor’s immigration spokesman, said. Sarah Hanson-Young, Greens immigration spokeswoman, said,”The minister needs to clarify how this occurred, how he will stop it from happening again and how he will ensure that the thousands of asylum seekers whose lives have now been put at risk will be protected because of this huge security breach.” The Minister argued, “The information was never intended to be in the public domain, nor was it in an easily accessible format within the public domain”. Scott Morrison has said that he will welcome the privacy commissioner’s investigation into this breach.
