AUTHENTIC AMERICAN BIB OVERALL FROM THE 1930s I’m wearing the exclusive 1935 Mechanic BIB for men now! I can recommend it to everybody else. As a man, already since a long time I would very much like to start to wear a real authentic American BIB workers-overall from the 1930-1950s, those models which became rather popular in the rockerscene after the Second World War. I mean the straight BIBs made from very heavy and stiff denim, without any superfluous decoration, just with a big frontflap covering your chest, wide braces, a row of simple metal buttons to close it at the sides and deep pockets. Unfortunately, they are very seldom worn by men today. Searching on the Internet I came across the Pike Brothers1935 Mechanic BIB Overall. My first reaction, when I saw pictures of a whole group of guys wearing it, was: wow! What an extremely hot, superior BIB Overall is this! I like this heavy denim and this working style. Its very great that Pike Brothers did restart the production of this type of dungarees some years ago! This is exactly the one I already was searching for so long and I very, very much would like to wear. I decided I MUST have one too! Three weeks ago I got mine. It took some time to find a dealer nearby who sells them, as in the Netherlands only very few men dares to wear a BIB in public as daily dress. It still is rather hazardous, as a man you become an eye-catcher, so I had my hesitations, yes. But when I saw the 1935 Mechanic BIB in reality in stock there, even before putting it on I immediately knew: this indeed it is, this I want to wear. Already the ponderous weight when I took it in my hands, was impressive. And than to put it on! A real big sensation! This special feeling of the stiff and heavy denim! I had never worn such a rough BIB overall in my life before, this really was the first time for me. To close and open the BIB takes some time therefore, I struggled with the sidebuttons and the suspender-braces, before I got all right in place. And of course, as the trouserlegs have a standard length and I’m not a giant, I needed to make rather high cuffs of some 6 inches, but that’s just as the BIB should be worn. But it fits well and is very, very comfortable, more than I did presume on base of the reflections made about the material on the internet. I knew that of course I had to get adjusted to the whole, as to the special feeling of the very big frontflap covering my chest and the fact that it goes really, really high up at the sides, compared to the standard jeans one wears nowadays. I was really caught by this unusual grip on my hips, especially as it has thanx to the upper buttons a rather narrow fit, preventing any slobbering of the frontflap or the backflap. In the beginning it is as if you’re imprisoned in your BIB, being on all sides really encircled by it in a tight way it makes you think that it in a way will restrict your movability. But after you have overcome your first embarrassment the BIB starts to become quite comfortable. But because of the stiff material wearing it is a totally new feeling to me. Anyhow, as all looks very masculine I am very, very happy to wear a real authentic American BIB overall of the 1930s now. I love it! Im wearing my BIB now already for three weeks without any interruption. Its just such a great piece to wear that I cant take it off and to exchange it for another article dress! Well, as Pike Brothers states one should wear it without washing it for several months when it’s new, I can add without problems some more weeks too. I recently came across a pic of a trucker on the internet, wearing his Pike Brothers Mechanic BIB already for two years every day. I think I will be the next one to do that.... For the time being I do not want to wear anything else. Every morning again it is a marvellous experience to put it on, to button it up and to fasten the braces! Of course, because a BIB overall still is an unusual garment to wear as a man in public in an urban environment, nobody being able to overlook it as the huge frontflap intrudes itself inevitable to the spectator, I needed some time to get used to being just dressed this very showily way all days, at home and at my work, as I always wear my BIB indoors totally uncovered. To be honest: in the beginning it needs some courage to do that, but wearing a BIB without the sturdy frontflap being visible makes no sense. Otherwise I could put on a normal jeans as well. And in the meantime also my colleagues and nearest relatives, who partly were really amazed when I turned up in my new BIB for the first time, now after three weeks of uninterrupted wearing dont know otherwise. For them I already start to become the guy who just always wears a BIB.
