AUTISM – it’s not fun. Sure, we find ways to adapt, to fit in (where we can), we plan escape routes, always have a bag of tricks, learn how to communicate, figure out what certain behaviors mean, we have learned warning signs, always living in anticipation, in prevention mode of the next challenge that could lead to a meltdown that takes hours to recover from, “you can’t do that, he doesn’t like this, please try that, no, please try this”, “we have to go, sorry, we can’t attend”, missing out on the luxury of just jumping in the car and going with the flow, missing out on the sound of our boys’ voices, not knowing exactly what they are thinking or how they are feeling, unable to help, feeling helpless, feeling sad, feeling the grieving process over and over again, but no one has died. These are just glimpses into what we, as parents, feel/think/live every moment of every day. We choose to share the good. We choose to FIND the good. We choose to celebrate the lives we have been given and our strengths. What gets attention grows, and we want the good to grow. But it is silly to think that our lives are all good. Day in and day out, it’s a challenge. People don’t always want to know how tough it really is because it is uncomfortable. So we don’t share that aspect. What would you say? What would you do? So we share and celebrate the good!! What gets attention grows. I am running a marathon for Autism Speaks because this organization fights for our boys through research and advocacy. I, as a mom, just wanted to do something profound. Something challenging, something out of my comfort zone to show my passion for my boys, other families and the importance of continuing to work to educate others about autism. It doesn’t seem to be going away and the more people I meet, the more autistic individuals I know. We are not special. We are one family in a group of many. I am asking for your donation today. Please consider supporting the Reese family on this long journey. I promise, you will have made a difference. We thank all those who have already donated and who continue to support us. You know who you are…you have been blessings to us. We wish you many blessings and give thanks!! Now I am off for a training run :) Here is my link…please consider making a donation to Autism Speaks right now. events.autismspeaks.org/nycmarathon/coachtammyreese
