AVILA ON ESPNU COLORADO STATE VS BOISE STATE TUESDAY 10:00 P.M. Named MOUNTAIN WEST Player of the Week.... (Fort Collins, Colorado)-McAllen HS Basketball Graduate JJ Avila, of the NCAA No.24 ranked Colorado State Rams was named the Mountain West Player of the Week today for his performance in Colorado States win over San Diego State on Saturday. In the Rams only game of the week, Avila was masterful against the normally stingy Aztec defense, scoring 29 points on 12-of-16 shooting with three rebounds, two assists, two steals and one turnover. The win kept the Rams (18-2) right in the thick of the MW title race at 5-2, a game behind Wyoming (6-1) and in a three-way tie for second with SDSU and Fresno State. After CSU took a double-digit lead in the second half Saturday at a sold-out Moby Arena, Avila helped hold off an SDSU comeback with a bucket with 18 seconds to go that put the Rams up four. The senior forward is making a strong case to be considered the MW player of the year as the league season nears its halfway point. Avila enters Tuesdays game at Boise State sixth in the conference in scoring (15.7), third in rebounding (7.4), fifth in field-goal percentage (56.5), ninth in assists (3.1) and second in steals (1.9). Colorado State pushed its season-opening win streak to 14 games before seeing the run end with a Jan. 3 loss at New Mexico. The Rams enter this week’s action with a 18-2 record, marking the best 20-game start in program history. Colorado State’s 14-0 start marked the best undefeated opening to a campaign in program history, surpassing the previous record of 6-0, which was accomplished three times (1970-71; 2005-06; 2012-13). The 14-game win streak was also the longest in program history, eclipsing the previous school record of 11, set during the 1988-89 season. The Rams went 13-0 in non-conference play, becoming the third team in the 16-year history of the Mountain West to end its non-league slate undefeated. They join San Diego State, who entered the 2010-11 MW slate with a perfect 15-0 record in non-conference action, and Wyoming, who brought a 13-0 mark against non-league opponents into its 2012-13 Conference opener. The Cowboys added a 14th non-conference victory in early February of that season, making the Rams, Aztecs and Pokes the only three teams in MW history ever to go undefeated in regular-season non-conference play. The Rams will travel to play Boise State at 10 p.m. on nationally televised game ESPNU. Great Job Avila! He was HSSMs All-South Texas MVP his junior and senior seasons at McAllen High School.
