AVIS DE RECRUTEMENT: AfricaRice recrute: RESEARCH ASSISTANT – RICE COMMODITY SPECIALIST Re-advertisement Ref: GSS/07/RD/2013/03/01/15/01 The AfricaRice Center (AfricaRice) wishes to employ a highly qualified Research Assistant - Rice Commodity Specialist who will be based at Cotonou, Benin. This position is funded by the Multinational‐CGIAR Project on Support to Agricultural Research for Development of Strategic Crops in Africa (SARD‐SC). The overall objective of SARD‐SC is to enhance food and nutrition security and contribute to poverty reduction in AfDB’s low income Regional Member Countries (RMCs). Its specific objective is to enhance the productivity and income of four of CAADP’s priority value chains –cassava, maize, rice, and wheat on a sustainable basis. About AfricaRice AfricaRice is one of the 15 international agricultural research Centers that are members of the CGIAR Consortium. It is also an autonomous intergovernmental association of African member countries. Responsibilities The Research Assistant – Rice Commodity Specialist will work under the direct supervision of the Rice Commodity Specialist / AfricaRice in Cotonou, Benin or his duly assigned representative. S/he will undertake the following functions in the SARD‐SC project: Assist in the allocation and disbursement of NARS grants and keep records of grant disbursement to the NARS / Rice Task Forces of the SARD‐SC beneficiary countries. Monitor and keep a record of the submission of technical and financial reports by SARDSC beneficiary countries. Contribute to the establishment and facilitation of functional innovation platforms (IPs) in the rice sector development hubs in the SARD‐SC beneficiary countries. Through the innovation platforms (IPs), assist in the dissemination and documentation of research products in collaboration with small‐to‐medium scale local seed businesses and fabricators of farm machinery, tools, and processing and value adding equipment. Contribute to the preparation of annual workplans, budgets, financial and technical reports. Contribute to the procurement of goods and services by the project management unit for the benefit of beneficiaries in SARD‐SC supported institutions. Actively engage in monitoring, evaluation and learning processes of the innovation platforms (IPs) in the rice value chain. Participate in the organization of training courses on integrated rice management, multistakeholder processes, value chain approaches and meetings/conferences, as well as the management of fellowships. Contribute to the publication of extension materials – videos, rural radio, evidence based success stories from the innovation platforms (IPs) in the rice value chain. Assist in internal and external audits of SARD‐SC. Undertake any other project‐related task assigned by the Rice Commodity Specialist or his duly assigned representative. Requirements: The selected candidate should possess: MSc degree in Economics, Management Science or equivalent, with at least 4 years work experience in product distribution and marketing. Familiar with multi‐stakeholder processes in value chains. Experience in writing technical reports and contributing to extension materials and newsletters. Experience in organizing meetings, conferences/workshops. Possess good analytical and planning skills, and highly organized. Good experience in working with indigenous small‐to‐medium private sector businesses and NGOs. Strong communication skills in either French or English, with a good working knowledge of the other language. A good team player with ability to take responsibilities for tasks with minimal supervision. Willingness to travel locally and, where needed, regionally and internationally. Ability to work in a multicultural environment in close collaboration with the NARS. Computer literate (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
